Xarelto® Lawsuits & Litigations
A number of people throughout the United States have experienced severe bleeding issues after taking the medication Xarelto®. Xarelto® is an anticoagulant typically used to help prevent blood clots, but it has been causing a number of issues for many patients who have been taking the drug. Some of the common conditions linked to the drug include brain hemorrhages, hemorrhagic stroke, internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, and wrongful death as a result of bleeding issues. As a result, victims are now coming forward and filing lawsuits against the manufacturer for the injuries they have suffered.
How Has Xarelto® Been Used?
Xarelto®, also called rivaroxoban, has been on the market since 2011. It was developed by Bayer Health Care and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Xarelto® has been prescribed to millions of people, to help reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and other issues caused by blood clots. Many doctors have prescribed Xarelto to patients who have hip or knee surgery, as a means to prevent clots following the surgery.
Although all blood thinners can cause internal bleeding, there are also antidotes that can be taken in the event that complication arises. However, there is currently no antidote to Xarelto®. As a result, it is far more dangerous than other blood thinners, but the manufacturers did not disclose these risks adequately to either physicians or the patients who were prescribed this medication. This means that the medical community, along with the public, did not have enough information regarding the potential problems and side effects of Xarelto® to understand the risks involved in taking this drug, at the time it was prescribed to thousands of people. Warnings regarding the potential for serious and fatal bleeding conditions were inadequate, even though there were a number of reports indicating the manufacturer knew, or should have known that Xarelto patients were actually at risk of more gastrointestinal bleeding, and that many would need to have transfusions as the result of taking Xarelto.
What Can A Xarelto® Lawsuit Achieve?
Xarelto® lawsuits can be based upon the insufficient warnings, as well as a lack of benefits to combat the added risks. Many believe that the drug should be recalled and feel that the medication is very dangerous, in light of the fact that there is no effective way to reverse the bleeding conditions it causes. The claims brought against Xarelto are similar to those brought against another anticoagulant called Pradaxa. In 2014, Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Pradaxa, agreed to pay in excess of $650 million to resolve the thousands of cases brought against them. Due to the fact that Bayer and Johnson & Johnson withheld information about the drug, similar compensation could be available for those patients injured while taking Xarelto although, as always, there can never be a guarantee of a successful recovery in a given case.
